Weekend Update – HVT Customers Light Up the Track in Several Debuts
This weekend we joined several customers at Motorsport Ranch in Cresson, Texas testing and running some of our newest products. This was NASA Texas Region’s second race of the season.
Mike Patterson, in the venerable #8 Camaro, hit the track with our HVT 6300e, an electronic 3 way adjustable damper. Mike runs NASA’s American Iron class which is based on weight to horsepower. Racing is always tight and handling defines the difference in winning and losing. Patterson’s previous best time was a 1:22.5 at MSR-C. In practice he ripped off a 1:19.7. A great start! A broken axle unfortunately ended testing on Friday. We were only able to make one custom map to his dampers, but that adjustment did help work Tractive’s ACE functionality into the weekend.
After Mike qualifying on the pole and won the first race on Saturday, American Iron starts Race 2 with an inverted start. It was easy to see how well the car handled, because Patterson drove around the field in two laps to win Race 2 setting the new lap record in the low 1:20s. Every corner he was offline, driving around the competition. Sunday’s results were the same along with resetting the track record to a 1:19.9. Congrats to Mike for a great first weekend with the new package. Several other HVT customers stepped up in American Iron as well. Marshall Mosty came to us for a JRi front insert project and a revalved Bilstein rear shock and ran strong all weekend with several low 1:20 lap times. Jim Dulaney and Casey Holdway running strong 1:20s as well.
Equally impressive were the races in Spec Iron where HVT is the spec damper for the series. Corey Rueth and Aaron McSpadden battled all weekend running high 1:21s and low 1:22s in this very limited prep Mustang class. The cars are turning out to be very impressive on the track!
Finally, John Vining debuted his former ASA Stock Car in Super Unlimited where “anything goes”. Vining is running our new HVT 6300i, an internal 3 way adjustable damper. Mechanical gremlins plagued the Vinings for most of the weekend, but that didn’t stop John. By Race 4 on Sunday, John got a great start in the race and never looked back beating a car that has gone uncontested for years in Super Unlimited. It is important to note a few things about John and his car. First of all, he’s 14 years old. Secondly, it weighs 500 pounds more than the competition with 100 less horsepower. And finally he did it without 3rd gear! He used 2nd and 4th only for the whole race. We’re proud to be a part of this new team and happy we could help them develop a damper package that seems to work against all odds. Congrats John!
